The WHO Global action plan for the prevention and control of Non communicable disease 2013 - 2020 indudes a target for reducing the global prevalence of tobacco use by 30% by the year 2025.
Tobacco use is defined as use of any type of tobacco - smoked / smokeless.
Tobacco is the most important factor in the actiology of Head and Neck cancer. Over 90% patients have history of smoking.Tobacco contains over 30 known carcinogens such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitrosamines. There is by synergistic interaction with alcohol due to increased absorption and increased solubility of carcinogens in alcohol as compared with aqueous saliva.
Oral Cancer is strongly associated in different forms of smokeless tobacco consumped by chewing. Tobacco and related products are responsible for oral cancers being the most common cancer in India.
A decreased incidence 4 oral cavity has beer reported in last 15 years, widely attributed to a reduction in tobacco use.
Measures to reduce tobacco demand
- Protect people from tobacco smoke.
- Help to quit tobacco use.
- Enforce ban on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship.
- Raise taxes on tobacco.
- It is possible to decrease the Incidence Oral Cancer by decreasing the tobacco use.
